Learn to paint iconic native Australian plants in watercolour with David Reynolds!

  • Date: 29 - 30 June 2024
  • Times:  Saturday and Sunday 9.30am - 4.30pm
  • Venue: Queensland Museum, Brisbane

Our chosen subject will be a Sturt's Desert Pea, (Swainsona formosa). We will focus on a bold composition for this subject, paying close attention to the lush red colours and contrasts in the flower and the soft greens of the stem. The classic desert pea flower is a deep scarlet or red on the standard, keel and wings with a black or dark red boss. Our aim is to paint this using a variety of techniques to capture its intricate detail.

Students learn in a relaxed and encouraging atmosphere with plenty of open discussion about the watercolour techniques used to create this beautiful subject. Practical demonstrations of each technique will be shown allowing students to progress to a finished watercolour painting.

Learning Outcomes:

  1. Develop skills in layering transparent, staining and opaque pigments
  2. Understand techniques in building high levels of detail
  3. Colour mixing using transparent washes
  4. Creating an iconic Australian native painting in watercolour

Materials:  Students will receive a materials list with details for the course.

Experience / Prerequisites: Suitable for beginners and all interested artists aged 16 and above.
