Learn all about cyanotypes, an alternative photography technique perfect for creating nature-inspired art – no darkroom needed! 

About workshop:

Love photography but don’t have access to a darkroom? This course will cover the basics of cyanotype photography and printing, getting familiar with the key steps in the process, equipment choices, and subject matter choices for nature-inspired art that you can make at your own home.

The course includes an explanation of how to prepare your own photosensitive paper, the steps for exposing and developing a basic cyanotype print, and will also introduce more complex techniques such as wet cyanotype photography, and toning.

Days/Times: Saturday 9.30am - 4.30pm

Venue: Glenbrook Hall, 2 Ross Street, Glenbrook, NSW

Learning Outcomes:

During the class you will produce several cyanotype prints using different techniques to build familiarity and confidence in this alternative photography process.

  • Knowledge of materials and equipment used with cyanotype printing
  • From beginning to end - discussing the steps from concept to finished cyanotype
  • Choosing items as subject matter for best cyanotype results
  • Basic understanding of the chemistry involved in the cyanotype process
  • Demonstrated understanding of more complex experimental techniques that can be used during exposure or after print development, such as wet cyanotype techniques and toning. 

About the tutor:

Freia Noss is a lifelong birder, painter, bushwalker, and Blue Mountains resident. During the week she works to manage re-vegetation projects on rural properties in Australia. In her free time she enjoys making artworks of the beautiful native Australian flora and fauna she encounters. Freia has degrees in both art theory and environmental science, and studied conservation biology in the Peruvian Amazon, with a focus on birds and butterflies. Her art practice has become an important a way for her to re-connect with the environment after a long day in the office, and to learn about and appreciate the complexity of our native wildlife.

Level/experience/prerequisites: 

Suitable for people aged 16+: beginners; Suitable for beginners through to intermediate students who wish to develop their skills in alternative photographic processes. .

Equipment: All materials are included for this workshop. Please also bring an apron to protect your clothes. 

Refund Policy: Any changes or cancellations made by NatureArt Lab for any reason are 100% refunded or credited (for use on another course). Any cancellations made by the purchaser are refunded (or held in credit) for the total amount LESS a $60 administrative processing fee.
