Be curious and connect with nature in the Southern Tablelands region through nature journaling with experienced tutor and nature journaler Dr. Fiona Boxall!

About the course:

There's nothing like a walk in nature to calm the mind and remind us that the world is a wonderful place. During this five-week nature journaling course you will learn about the principles and practice of nature journaling, along with insights into the importance of nature connections for humans.

During the first week of the course at the studio, Fiona will explore ecopsychology, the benefits of connecting with nature and talk through essential drawing, writing and observation skills to take into the field for your nature journaling practice. She will discuss the key elements of being a naturalist and explore the key steps for nature journaling using the natural history collection in the studio. Nature journaling is all about learning to see, promoting curiosity, asking questions and starting to notice things around you.

The following four weeks will be based at either the Southern Tablelands Ecosystems Park (STEP) at Forest 20 in the National Arboretum Canberra (or at close by natural areas with representative ecology) incorporating field observations and journaling practice. STEP is a regional botanic garden, education and ecosystem recovery centre for the Southern Tablelands.

Participants will be able to observe flora and fauna of wet and dry sclerophyll forests of our region, an ephemeral wetland and indigenous food and fibre plants of our region. Expert guides will provide botanical information on plants from each of these ecosystem types, and participants will have the opportunity to observe, journal and learn about the some of the fascinating interrelations between plants and animals. On completion of this course you will have a beautiful nature journal with a wealth of information on the key plant species and ecosystems of the Southern Tablelands region. You will also have the confidence to observe, draw and write about the natural world, as well as the knowledge, skills, materials and techniques to develop a beautiful personal record of your nature experiences wherever you are in the world.

About the tutor:

Dr. Fiona Boxall is a practicing artist, nature journaler and writer living in Canberra. Her passion for nature and desire to illustrate the things about it she loves has led her to develop expertise in watercolour, gouache, graphite ad coloured pencil.  After a career spent in magazines as a writer and editor as well as completing a PhD in Anthropology and Comparative Sociology, she has spent her semi-retirement nature journaling, visiting biodiversity hot spots and refining her artistic skills.  She currently works as a tutor for the Introductory Drawing Courses at NatureArt Lab and is keen to share her love of journaling and sketch booking as a way to learn more about the natural environment.  Fiona believes that creating a sketchbook and using it regularly is a wonderful way to develop your own artistic vision, voice and ability.
