Drawing is a foundation skill for almost all natural history art, from a quick field sketch to the most detailed illustration.
About the tutor:
Gillian Carden has a background in graphic design and is a practicing artist with over 20 years experience. Gillian combines theory and technical advice for our evening introductory watercolour and drawing classes. She has received excellent appraisals from students for her thorough approach to teaching.
About the course:
This course provides a comprehensive introduction to drawing with clear explanations of materials and techniques. Students will learn about line, value, mark making and shading and how to put these elements together in preliminary drawings. Using charcoal, graphite and pen and ink, we will look at basic shapes in nature, shadows, perspective and more. If you have always wanted to draw and not had the chance, then this class is for you!
Drawing needs minimal materials, is the easiest medium to carry with you in the field, and helps you to enjoy the natural environment by looking with a purpose.
Suitable for beginners and those wanting to revise their practice and build a solid foundation for their skills. A materials list will be available prior to the start of the class.
Please Note: This course will be offered with an online format to ensure the safety of our tutors and all participants during COVID19, with step-by-step guidance, demonstrations and guided instruction on homework exercises each week. In addition to the detailed tutorials, you will receive weekly handouts with exercises for completion. Tutors will provide personalised feedback on all homework completed during the course.
You will need a computer or laptop with a microphone and camera; students will need to download the Zoom application prior to the class.
