Our Course Convenor: Rainer Rehwinkel

A life-long naturalist and long-term resident of the Canberra region, Rainer started his career as a horticulturist.  Forevermore a keen gardener, Rainer undertook a Bachelor of Applied Science degree course in Vegetation and Wildlife Management at the University of Canberra, and capped that with an Honours year studying the effects of the growth of native grasses under eucalypts.  He enjoyed a career as an ecologist, with work on projects with the ACT and NSW Government environment departments.  Rainer worked in the NSW system for 20 years, mostly on grasslands and grassy woodlands and their associated fauna and flora, and particularly threatened species.

A co-author of two popular flora guides for local grassy ecosystems, Rainer has also edited and co-written numerous articles, chapters and reports, co-authored a journal article on the classification of grassland communities, and most recently wrote an entry on south-eastern Australia's grassy ecosystems for the Encyclopedia of the World's Biomes.  Rainer has long held a keen interest in education, and this was a major focus of his work with the NSW Government.  Now retired, Rainer spends his time between advocating for various environmental causes, undertaking land care activities, leading field trips to various grassy ecosystems sites, and as an almost religious every-day activity, birdwatching (both here in Australia and in far-flung parts of the world - Covid-19 permitting!). In 2019, Rainer won the Australian National Individual Landcare Award for his contribution to environmental work in Australia.
