Make your own journal using interesting papers and learn techniques to fill it with beautiful illustrations and nature observations.

About the workshop:

In this course you will build a journal from the ground up.  Learn how to use toned papers and coptic stitching, and create your own beautiful journals that will become a treasure.  Amanda will also cover basic sketching techniques using mixed media to start you on your journal journey.

Dates: 27 to 28 August 2022

Days: Saturday and Sunday 9.30am - 4.30pm

Venues: NatureArt Lab, M16 Artspace, 21 Blaxland Crescent, Griffith

(Students are requested to bring their own drinks/snacks/lunch.  There is a cafe located a short walk away).

Learning Outcomes: 

  • Knowledge of materials and equipment used to create your own sketchbook or journal
  • From beginning to end - discussing the steps from concept to finished Sketchbook/Journal
  • Knowledge of all the steps involved in creating your Journal and the ability to create your own in the future using a variety of papers
  • Demonstrated understanding of how to approach and develop your skills using a variety of media to do field sketches and studies

Materials:   A journal making kit is provided to each student for a cost of $40 (to be given direct to the tutor at the first session).  Additional items required (not in the kit)  will be provided upon booking.  Please check your junk and spam folders so you do not miss our emails.

Experience/prerequisites: Suitable for aged 16+ participants who are beginners to intermediate level. Good manual dexterity is required for Journal making.

Minimum Student Numbers: This course requires a minimum number of bookings.  Should we not receive enough bookings, the course may be postponed at the discretion of NatureArt Lab.  Any enrolled students will be notified by email and offered the option to either transfer their booking to the new date of receive a refund.

About the tutor: 

Amanda McLean is an established Artist, based in Murrumbateman NSW.  She creates beautiful landscape works in Pastel and is hailed for her sensitive interpretations of both Clouds and Water.  She has a passion for recording her travels, inspirations and observations in Journals and Sketchbooks.

Amanda has written extensively for National and International Art Publications about her technique and art practice.  She teaches workshops around the country and loves to inspire others with her passion for the Natural World.  Amanda has appeared on an episode of 'Colour your life' where she talks about her art practice and methods.

Amanda is a very experienced Tutor, her style is both inspiring, informative and fun.  She is generous with her knowledge of materials and techniques and calls upon vast experience of painting, sketching and visiting interesting places.

Amanda has worked closely with Art Spectrum, an Australian Art Materials Company, to create special Pastel and paper colours that are marketed worldwide.

Refund Policy:  Any changes or cancellations made by NatureArt Lab for any reason are 100% refunded or credited (for use on another course).  Any cancellations made by the purchaser are refunded (or held in credit) for the total amount LESS a $60 administrative processing fee.  Special consideration for waiving the $60 fee for compassionate/ extraordinary circumstances can be granted by NatureArt Lab by writing to

Any additional COVID-19 related restrictions and/or requirements will be conveyed by email prior to the course/workshop.  This policy will be reviewed and amended as ACT Government policy is changed and these changes will also be conveyed to students prior to commencement.
