Learn to create a beautiful landscape in pastel with popular internationally renowned artist Amanda McLean!

About the tutor: 

Amanda McLean is an internationally renowned Pastel Artist who has been working with the medium for over 30 years and teaching for over 25. She has a passion for the Australian landscape and coastline in its varying forms and is recognized for her sensitive interpretations, especially her rendering of clouds, skies, and water. Her paintings are often hailed for their sensitivity and ‘sense of place’.

She has written extensively about the Pastel medium for Australian Artist Magazine and international publications including International Artist Magazine, Pastel Artist International and Pratique des Arts. She was an editorial consultant to Australian Artist for many years. They described her as ‘one of the country's leading pastellists’.  Amanda has worked closely with the Australian Company Art Spectrum to produce new pastel colours and paper types.

A popular tutor, her teaching style is positive, empathetic and she is generous in sharing knowledge. She has taught many classes and workshops both nationally and internationally.

Amanda makes her own sketchbooks and uses them to record her life and travels. She regularly conducts sessions on making sketchbooks and different techniques to use in them. Amanda was featured on ‘Colour In Your Life’, an international art documentary series now available on YouTube.

About the workshop:

This two day workshop will lead you through the elements of beautiful landscapes in pastel. You will be guided through the whole process, working from your own reference material. Amanda will demonstrate her proven process and practice while you work on developing your own style. There will be plenty of advice, tips and instruction on best practice. We will cover the major elements in the landscape like Trees, Sky, Clouds, Grass, Rocks and Water.

Learning Outcomes: 

  • Learn a variety of techniques and interesting mark making for working in Pastel
  • An understanding of paper selection and how important it is
  • Develop the confidence to tackle ‘perceived’ difficult elements
  • A basic understanding of how to approach subjects in pastel
  • An understanding of what colours make a good pastel landscape palette

Suitable for beginners and for students with some pastel experience. A materials list will be provided prior to the workshop. Morning and afternoon tea refreshments are included; please bring your own lunch each day.
