Spend a weekend exploring the wonders of one of Canberra’s venerable old trees and then producing a large acrylic painting of it.

  • Dates: 2 -3 March 2024
  • Day/Time: Sat/Sun 9.30-4.30pm
  • Location: NatureArt LabM16 Artspace, 21 Blaxland Crescent, Griffith, ACT

The first part of this weekend workshop consists of a half-day journaling session beneath a senior eucalypt. You will spend the morning learning about the species and interrelationships of this tree with the birds, mammals and insects which form part of its micro-environment. You will learn about the importance of the interconnections between the tree and the other lifeforms it co-exists with, as well as its own personal attributes, from the texture of the bark, to the shape of the leaves, its flowers and the fruit.
After lunch on the first day we will head back into the studio to begin putting what we have learnt onto paper, creating sketches and preparing a composition. We will then transfer that composition to a large canvas and spend the rest of the weekend working on our acrylic rendition of the tree, incorporating our newly gained knowledge and the deeper level of understanding gained from our morning spent exploring the tree and its living environment.

Each student will be able to produce a work that reflects their own experience and response to the tree as a complex and beautiful lifeform. This workshop will suit all levels of experience as it is based on a personal response rather than a purely scientific rendition.
