Learn to bookbind! Try this fun workshop with Sharon Peoples where you'll learn all about making concertina books.

  • Dates: Sunday 1, February (one day workshop)
  • Time: 10.00am - 3.00pm
  • Location: NatureArt LabM16 Artspace, 21 Blaxland Crescent, Griffith, ACT

About the course:

The books you'll be making in this class take flight from simple concertina books – you might like to bring in images, a poem, recipe or perhaps use paper decorated from another class.

You'll begin with a formal concertina book with hard covers and then work through variations such as slotted concertina, double concertina and interwoven concertina. These can become excellent forms for your own artwork made in other classes. You'll also be shown how to join papers together to make long concertina books. In the second half of the class, you'll make a flag book with hard covers.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this workshop, you will be able to:
1. Meticulously fold sheets of papers
2. Accurately cut paper
3. Make hard covers
4. Understand the grain of paper
5. Understand glues for this task

Pre-requisites: This course is suitable for 16+ beginners with little to no bookbinding experience, or for those wishing to build on the foundations of their bookbinding practice.

Materials:  All materials will be provided and inclusive of class fees. Any questions can be directed to info@natureartlab.com.au

About the tutor:

Dr Sharon Peoples has worked as an artist in Canberra for over 25 years, exhibiting
nationally and internationally as well as taking on commissioned work. She has had
twelve solo exhibitions since 2010, the most recent were ‘Garden Promenade’
Australian National Botanic Gardens, Canberra, Oct (2024) and ‘From the Highest
Tree’, Avid Gallery, Wellington NZ (2023). Sharon spends much time wandering and
wondering about gardens. From her own domestic garden to the local bushland and
further afield to surrounding national parks, she is energised and draws inspiration
by walking in these environments. In recent years a gradual shift to include
bookbinding and making has occurred. One highlight of this activity is having her
handbound book in the exhibition Scripta manent VII “In principio The Word in Arvo
Pärt’s Music”, at the Estonian History Museum, Tallinn, Estonia, Oct 2025. Currently,
her bird-related objects are exhibited at the King Island Gallery where she did a
residency last year.
