NatureArt Lab offers participants the opportunity to learn new skills, meet new people and immerse themselves in art inspired by nature. Select a series of courses to suit your interests, and consider developing your foundation skills through a better understanding of colour theory, drawing skills or use of water-based mediums such as watercolour or gouache. Our team of experienced tutors will support your creative learning journey with expert instruction and guidance in a fully equipped art-science space.

Learn to illustrate birds like a professional! This course provides an introduction to bird illustration using gouache, with guidance from professional illustrator Peter Marsack. Students will learn how to accurately illustrate a bird using sketches, observe museum specimens, set up measurements, and refer to resources such as photographs and videos. Topics include bird structure, anatomy, feathers, plumage details, colour and habitat. By the end of the course, students will have completed several studies of familiar local birds, or work on their own projects with expert guidance.

Suitable for beginners and continuing students with some experience using gouache. Students wishing to build foundation drawing skills can consider enroling in 'Drawing 1' with Gillian Carden. Note: NatureArt field observation sessions with Peter Marsack will be available separately.

Peter Marsack

Peter Marsack is one of Australia’s most respected professional wildlife artists. He trained and worked as a biologist in state and federal public service environmental agencies for over 25 years. He is a qualified natural history artist and illustrator, with a Graduate Diploma of Natural History Illustration from the University of Newcastle. Peter has contributed to a range of award-winning publications, including with Canberra author and naturalist Ian Fraser to illustrate ‘A Bush Capital Year, a natural history of the ACT’, published in 2011. Peter is one of three artists for the award-winning Australian Bird Guide published by CSIRO in 2017. Peter now teaches natural history art in the ACT.
