Learn to create digital natural history illustrations anywhere, at any time!

About the tutors:

Bonnie Koopmans is a recent graduate of the Bachelor of Natural History Illustration at the University of Newcastle. Having previously completed the Bachelor of Communication Design at Monash University, she has a thorough and unique understanding of digital media, and a particular interest in the intersection of traditionally and digitally created art. Bonnie is fascinated by all aspects of nature but has a soft spot for insects and birds (especially pigeons!).

Julian Teh is a Canberra-based natural history photographer and illustrator, who has recently graduated from the Bachelor of Natural History Illustration program at the University of Newcastle. With a background in ornithology, he finds great joy in using his creative skills to share his experiences from the field and passion for the natural world. Julian is particularly interested in the cultivation of digital art as a medium for natural history illustration, incorporating traditional techniques and processes into the digital toolkit to depict natural subjects and environments.

About the workshop:

Procreate is a revolutionary addition to the digital artist’s toolkit. Despite being a relative newcomer, this app has capability to rival even Adobe Photoshop for digital illustration. The ability to create digitally is now available anywhere – from the field to your couch or studio, in a truly portable format.

In this workshop, you will be introduced to the program, the hardware that runs it, and learn how it can be applied to natural history art and illustration. We will show you how to use Procreate for field sketching, notation and observational drawing, before diving into the process of creating your own finished piece, from setting up your canvas to finished render. We will teach you some of the handy tricks and features available in the program, as well as exploring ways to share and produce your digital work.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Navigating the Procreate user interface and selecting appropriate tools for a variety of applications
  • Applying digital media to field sketching and observational drawing
  • Preparing a working file for a fully-rendered illustration
  • The process of developing your own illustration from start to finish
  • Applying digital media to the real world – distributing your work digitally and physically

You will need to have the following equipment to complete this course:

  • iPad with Apple Pencil compatibility
  • Apple Pencil (or equivalent)

This workshop is suitable for students with drawing skills; no prior digital illustration experience is needed.
