About this Course:

This course builds on your Nature Journaling skills. It helps you to become more familiar and practiced with your drawing and observation techniques and in turn, also helps you connect more deeply to the natural world while you work. This is the second of two complimentary and stand-alone workshops at this venue - you can book into one or both!

Learning Outcomes:

• Look more closely at the Wetlands and Mangrove habitat to find interrelationships between species and their environments.
• Explore the use of pen and ink and simple shading techniques to consider the important role of light and shadow in the drawing process.
• Further develop on your known nature journaling and drawing skills.
• Be assisted and work through any difficulties you find occurring in your drawing and journaling work.
• Continuing to discover more about the common and surprising species of this incredibly important habitat.

Date:   7 August 2022
Day/Time: Sunday 9:30am-12:30pm
Venue: Maroochy Wetland Sanctuary, Sports Rd, Bli Bli QLD

About the Venue:

The Maroochy Wetlands Sanctuary is located at Bli Bli, around 1.5hrs north of Brisbane. The area is rich in biodiversity and contains dry eucalypt forests, rainforest, melaleuca forest, casuarina woodland, salt marsh and mangroves. It is interesting to note that one of south east Queensland’s largest stands of Mangrove Fern, Acrostichum speciosum, grows amongst the melaleucas. There are also 200 species of birds, as well as crabs, butterflies, reptiles, fish and other wildlife species that frequent the wetlands.

On your visit please remember that all plants and animals are protected and cannot be removed from the wetlands sanctuary.

In case of heavy rain, we have exclusive-use of a meeting room on site.

Students are requested to bring their own morning tea and drinks.

A materials list will be provided prior to the start of the first class.

About the Tutor:

Petra Meer travels everywhere with a creative journal, while riding an adventure bike along the Oodnadatta Track to the Red Centre, sailing up the Eastern Seaboard on a yacht or on countless bush walks into wild places. She also carries a journal for daily life; to travel well through the transitions of living in a busy world. Journaling for Petra is a part of a lively and creative practice; of which nature journaling is an integral part.

Petra has degrees in Art and Design and also a Masters of Counselling. She works as an artist, illustrator, maker, wellbeing facilitator, community arts worker and counsellor. She has exhibited to a national level and her natural history illustration has been commissioned by Parks and Wildlife Services and local councils to illustrate endangered species and to bring awareness to fragile ecosystems. Petra has also recently launched a detailed habitat focused colouring book for Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve.

She believes that making art in nature with meaning and purpose can be accessible to anyone. It can offer us new insights and opportunities for growth, and bring with it an increased sense of joy, relaxation and awe.
