Illustrating Birds in Watercolour and Coloured Pencil - with Bonnie Koopmans

Available

$330.00

Description

Learn about the anatomy of birds and create a bird illustration using combined mediums of watercolour and coloured pencil!

About the tutor:

Bonnie Koopmans is an artist, scientific illustrator and recent graduate of the Bachelor of Natural History Illustration at the University of Newcastle. Having previously completed the Bachelor of Communication Design at Monash University, she has a thorough and unique understanding of a variety of mediums, and is always looking to share her knowledge. Bonnie enjoys using different mediums in conjunction with each other to best utilise their various strengths, which leads to a unique and flexible combinations. She is fascinated by all aspects of nature but has a particular soft spot for insects and birds (especially pigeons!).

About the workshop:

This two-day workshop will take you through you the full process of creating an artwork in the combined mediums of watercolour and coloured pencil, from beginning field and composition sketches to producing a finished piece. Focusing on birds as subjects, there will be an emphasis on bird anatomy and creating accurate and lifelike illustrations, including an opportunity to draw bird subjects from life. We will then be using a combination of resources - such as field sketches of your own, photographs and publications - as the basis of a finished illustration. Bonnie will then guide you through the process of using watercolour as a base layer on which to add finer details with pencil.

We plan to include a two hour field trip to Jerrabomberra Wetlands to learn about field sketching, important information to note in the field and to create a reference for an illustration. This outing may be dependent on weather, so an alternative arrangement will be a studio-based drawing session with a live bird for drawing reference.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Basics of bird anatomy
  • Drawing birds from life, and what is important to capture in field sketches
  • Becoming familiar with the strengths of both watercolour and coloured pencil
  • How to create a finished art piece using this mixed media combination

Suitable for students with some experience with watercolour and coloured pencil mediums. A materials list will be provided prior to the workshop. Morning and afternoon tea refreshments are included; please bring your own lunch each day.

Dates: 15 - 16 February 2020
