About the course/workshop

If you’ve tried out and loved linocut as a medium for nature-inspired art, this workshop will guide you beyond simple line carving to learn technical and creative techniques for creating beautiful nature-inspired prints. Over two days, you will be tutored through a series of exercises designed to consider and explore various aspects of linocut printmaking. Learn about different mark-making techniques, start thinking ‘in reverse’, practice tonal values using only black and white spaces, and start incorporating lighting and composition elements into your designs. Access NatureArt Lab’s studio teaching collection of nature objects for inspiration and as study guides. This workshop aims to develop your confidence in your carving skills and your design approach, and you will complete the weekend with a beautiful series of mini lino carvings and prints on professional paper.

Learning Outcomes

  • Experience different mark-making techniques through guided exercises and experimentation.
  • Gain knowledge of and experimentation with various compositional, light, form and tonal considerations through discussion and guided practical exercises.
  • From beginning to end – gain understanding in developing design concepts through to the carving process and finally, hand printing a series of completed linocuts.
  • Improved confidence of how to approach and develop relief printed (linocut) plates depicting natural objects and forms.
