Drawing is a foundation skill for almost all natural history art, from a quick field sketch to the most detailed illustration.
About the tutor:
Dr. Fiona Boxall is a practicing artist, nature journaler and writer living in Canberra. Through her art and journaling, she combines her multiple interests in the environment, botany, the natural world and the written word. She works with numerous mediums, including graphite, watercolour and coloured pencils. She is interested in the interconnections between scientific knowledge, human experiences and creative processes, and her work allows her to explore her interest in birds, insects, plants and fungi and the relationships between them. Prior to expanding her art practice, she gained a doctorate in anthropology and worked for many years as a magazine journalist and editor.
About the course:
This ONLINE course provides a comprehensive introduction to drawing with clear explanations of materials and techniques. Students will learn about perspective, line, value, mark making and shading and how to put these elements together in preliminary drawings. Using graphite, we will look at basic shapes in nature, shadows, perspective and more. If you have always wanted to draw and not had the chance, then this class is for you!
Drawing needs minimal materials, is the easiest medium to carry with you in the field, and helps you to enjoy the natural environment by looking with a purpose.
This course is a recommended pre-requisite for all new NatureArt Lab students. Suitable for beginners and those wanting to revise their practice and build a solid foundation for their skills. A materials list will be available prior to the start of the class. COVID-safe practices apply.
