Discover the beauty and complexity of Australian native orchids in this immersive workshop. Learn about their anatomy, ecology and morphology, observe orchids in their natural environment, and develop your skills in drawing and painting these remarkable plants.

  • Field trip to Black Mountain, ACT: Friday, 16 October, 2 – 4pm
  • Workshop Dates:  17 – 18 October 2026
  • Days/Times: Saturday & Sunday, 9.30am – 4pm
  • Location: NatureArt Lab Studio, M16 Artspace, 21 Blaxland Crescent, Griffith, ACT.

We begin with a field trip to Black Mountain, where you'll find, photograph and sketch seasonal orchids in their natural habitat. Anna will explain the diversity and ecology of native orchids, why their conservation matters, and how orchids, insects, fungi, trees and shrubs depend on one another. She'll also share tips on how, where and when to find orchids, and how to make quick sketches from nature.

Then you'll spend two full days in the studio turning your observations into finished artwork. Anna will demonstrate how to capture the colours, patterns and textures of orchid flowers and leaves in watercolour. You'll learn how to make an accurate initial drawing, scale it, plan your composition and transfer it to watercolour paper. By the end, you'll have produced a scientifically accurate botanical painting of a native terrestrial orchid.

Level of Experience: Suitable for beginner to intermediate students with some drawing and watercolour experience.

Materials List:  A materials list will be sent when you book. Please keep an eye out for our email – check your JUNK and SPAM folders as we are finding a lot of our emails going here.
