Acacias in Watercolour - with Cheryl Hodges
Learn to paint a beautiful spring-flowering acacia in watercolour with award-winning botanical artist Cheryl Hodges and celebrate National Wattle Day at the National Arboretum Canberra!
About the tutor:
Cheryl Hodges is an award-winning local artist who has been painting botanical watercolours since 2000. Her painting technique involves building up colour in many layers of soft washes, creating an almost translucent effect, then intensifying the final painting with very detailed dry brush work. She enjoys painting Australian native plants and insects. Cheryl is an invited member of the Florilegium of the Royal Botanic Gardens Sydney with her painting Eucalyptus tereticornis in the permanent collection.
About the workshop:
This workshop will focus on creating a realistic painting of a spring flowering Acacia specimen from the Southern Tablelands Ecosystem Park (STEP) Garden at the National Arboretum. Participants will visit the STEP garden accompanied by a local wattle expert to see a range of acacias in flower. You will then return to the Terrace Room, to observe and draw the plant, discussing composition, tone and form, then bring the drawing to life using washes, glazing and achieving detail with dry-brush work.
Suitable for beginner to intermediate level. A materials list will be available on booking. You may request, in advance, a small kit of materials sufficient for the day for $50 payable to Cheryl at the workshop. Refreshments and lunch are available for purchase at the arboretum cafe on the day.
Please note that parking fees apply - parking is available in the main car park at the Arboretum for $7.80 per day or $2.10 per hour.
