Students will learn drawing techniques and be encouraged to practice new drawing skills so that they become more familiar. It also offers you a broader way to ‘see’ and experience the natural world.

About this Course:
During this Drawing Foundation Studies workshop, held at the beautiful Discovery Centre at Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve, local artist Petra Meer will introduce you to the foundations skills of drawing with a focus on observing and drawing natural and botanical finds.

Petra will work with you to develop your skills 'step by step' each week, and progressively enable you to use graphite drawing media with increased confidence, skill and enjoyment.

Throughout this workshop you will be encouraged to use each exercise to strengthen your observational skills. This workshop is an opportunity to also broaden how to ‘see’ and understand botanical and nature based for the purpose drawing and more subjects broadly.

Dates: 5, 12, 19 August 2022
Day/Time: Fridays 10.00am-3.00pm (with one hour for lunch)
Venue: The Discovery Centre, Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve, 148 Mountain View Road, Maleny

Petra will begin by introducing you to some of the important practicalities of using graphite drawing materials. You will learn about the vast potential of your humble drawing materials and equipment, how much they can offer you as an artist, how to choose the right tool for the job, and how to care for your media and equipment.

Through practical exercises, you will progressively learn about the core drawing
concepts used in drawing natural subjects. This will include experience in applying
measuring skills, construction lines and geometric shapes to plan and initiate an accurate outline.

You will also be guided through the use of rendering techniques to indicate three dimensional forms in nature including: how to apply value, light and shadow, graduated tone, the use of contour lines and various shading techniques. Then over time, Petra will help to extend your drawing skills with exercises in perspective and foreshortening to draw botanical subjects that twist, bend, and curl.

Finally, you will learn about the various elements and techniques of composition
included in botanical illustration and how to apply and use these skills in developing a final composition for the completion of the workshop.

We recommend participants to complete a series of homework exercises each week in their own time between classes. This ensures that each person has the time and opportunity to develop their newly learned skills in the practice of drawing, before moving on to learning how to build on these skills in consecutive classes.
