This two-day immersive workshop is designed to give you an extended pause to connect to nature using nature journaling, the creative arts, relaxation and mindfulness.

About the Workshop:
This workshop will provide you with an opportunity to pause and spend some focused time creating and being in nature, to work on strengthen your self-care practices. Self-care, along with creative time, often get put to the bottom of our ‘to-do’ lists, particularly when our lives are busy and we have many responsibilities and concerns all vying for our attention.

Creativity, journaling, connecting to nature, relaxation and mindfulness processes are all very useful in restoring balance and wellbeing in our lives. Even if you have never drawn, or kept a creative journal before, you will find that these techniques offer an accessible and useful start for your creative self-care practice.

These processes are quite simple and require very few materials, cost or time to use, but they can have a profound impact on our ability to ground and centre ourselves when needed. This workshop offers new ways to restore yourself when you are out in the world once again and dealing with everyday life.

Days: Friday and Saturday 10am - 3pm

Venue: The Discovery Centre, Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve, 148 Mountain View Rd, Maleny

(Students are requested to bring their own drinks/snacks/lunch.  There is a cafe located onsite). 

We will cover several key considerations of using and keeping a creative nature journal, and spend time exploring and playing with various art media. We will look at how journals can be used broadly as a ‘creative space’ and experiment with simple but effective writing, drawing and relaxation techniques that can help you to create more personal calm. We will also explore how to connect more deeply to nature as a source of wellbeing and how this connection has many subtle and ongoing benefits.

On the completion of this workshop you will have experienced several new skills to enable you to begin using your creative nature journal for increased connection, well-being and self care. You will also have had an opportunity to begin creating a self-care and nature-based practice that is tailored to suit the specific needs of your own unique life.

About the venue:

Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve is known as the natural jewel of the Sunshine Coast hinterland. It comprises 55 hectares of subtropical rainforest overlooking the Glass House Mountains landscape. A remnant of the rainforests that once covered the Blackall Range, the reserve is a living museum of diverse plant and animal life which will delight with its tranquility and beauty.

Learning Outcomes:
• Knowledge and experimentation with materials and equipment used with creative nature journaling.
• Experience the use of some key drawing, writing and relaxation processes used in creative journaling.
• Knowledge of how to use creative journaling and relaxation/mindfulness for connecting to self and enhancing the experience of being in nature for self-care.
• Knowledge on how to make the creative journaling process an effective part of your daily life.
• Explore creative practices that help to refine and personalise your approach for more relevance to your own unique needs.
• Have experienced the calming and connective effect of working in natural settings.

Field Trip:
We will occasionally be working outside in the grounds of Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve (weather permitting).

Required Experience:
Suitable for all students aged 16+ who wish to develop their creative self-care, and nature-based wellbeing skills.

Materials:
A materials list will be provided within 4 weeks of the course starting.

About the tutor:
Petra travels everywhere with a creative journal, while riding an adventure bike along the Oodnadatta Track to the Red Centre, sailing up the Eastern Seaboard on a yacht or on countless bush walks into wild places. She also carries a journal for daily life; to travel well through the transitions of living in a busy world with all of its ups and downs. Journaling for Petra is a part of a lively and creative, wellbeing focused practice; of which nature journaling is an integral part.

Petra has degrees in Art and Design and also a Masters of Counselling. She works as an artist, illustrator, maker, wellbeing facilitator, community arts worker and counsellor. Petra has exhibited to a national level and her natural history illustration is commissioned by Parks and Wildlife Services and local councils to illustrate endangered species and to bring awareness to fragile ecosystems. Petra has also recently launched a detailed habitat focused colouring book for Mary Cairncross Scene Reserve.

Petra has worked consistently in the arts, health and wellbeing area for many years facilitating art workshops for people of all skill levels, ages and abilities. Petra believes that making art in nature with meaning and purpose, can be accessible to anyone. It can offer us new insights and opportunities for growth, and bring with it an increased sense of joy, relaxation and awe, as we become more attuned to the natural world and our interconnectedness to it.

Alongside her work as a freelance illustrator and workshop tutor, Petra also works part-time in the disability sector facilitating creative environments and experiences for people of many varying abilities and levels of wellbeing. Her work is focused on creating access to the joy and health enhancing benefits of art-making and nature.
Petra’s media skills include the use of gouache, graphite, pen and ink, watercolour, photography, textiles, craft processes, printmaking, mixed media and collage. Petra teaches: drawing, painting, nature journaling, creative journaling for self care and wellbeing, book and journal making, contemporary fibre and textiles, eco-dyeing, deep listening, and relaxation and mindfulness.

Refund Policy: Any changes or cancellations made by NatureArt Lab for any reason are 100% refunded or credited (for use on another course). Any cancellations made by the purchaser are refunded (or held in credit) for the total amount LESS a $60 administrative processing fee. COVID-19 Policy: Students on NatureArt Lab studio courses or workshops are required to comply with all stated COVID-19 requirements specified at the time of booking. This includes showing proof of double vaccination prior to entry at the NatureArt Lab premises, wearing of masks indoors, use of sanitiser on entry and during the course/workshop and maintaining social distancing. Any additional COVID-19 related restrictions and/or requirements will be conveyed by email prior to the course/workshop. This policy will be reviewed and amended as QLD Government policy is changed and these changes will also be conveyed to students prior to commencement.
