About the course: 

The workshop will build your watercolour skills for botanical painting on paper with demonstrations of techniques from initial washes to dry brush detail and finishing, and through individual instruction.

The emphasis will be on close observation and accurate drawing for botanical painting. The subtle variations in colour and their use in creating tonal changes to indicate form will be explored along with the use of lighting to create a three dimensional painting. Suitable for students with some drawing skills who are interested in creating accurate botanical paintings.

Days/Times: Saturday/Sunday 9.30am - 4.30pm

Venue: NatureArt Lab Studio, M16 Workspace, 21 Blaxland Crescent, Griffith, ACT

Workshop Learning Outcomes:

• Recognise the importance of observation throughout the drawing and painting process
• Discussion of colour mixing and layering techniques for botanical painting
• Understand the use of lighting a subject and tonal values to create a three dimensional illusion
• Develop or further your knowledge of watercolour techniques to take your painting to a finished level. (Students should not expect to finish a work during the class)

Materials List: A materials list will be sent upon enrolment.

Experience/Pre Requisites recommended: This workshop is for people aged 16+ who have completed Watercolour One and Two, or commensurate experience.

About the tutor: 

Beverly Allen’s background was in graphic design and illustration and she has been a botanical painter since 1998. She teaches masterclasses internationally as well as at the Royal Botanic Garden Sydney where she co-founded and is president of their Florilegium Society. Beverly is an honorary member of the Chelsea Physic Garden Florilegium, the Botanical Art Society of Australia and a patron of the Hampton Court Palace Florilegium.

 Her paintings are held in The Florilegium: Royal Botanic Gardens Sydney, the Shirley Sherwood Collection, The Highgrove Florilegium for the Prince of Wales’ Charitable Trust, The Transylvania Florilegium for the Prince of Wales’s Foundation Romania, the Lindley Library, the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew Library and the Hunt Institute for Botanical Documentation. She exhibits at the Sydney Botanica exhibition as well as in the USA, the Netherlands, Japan, Italy and England.  

Beverly holds Gold Medals from the RHS London and the New York Botanic Garden and the ASBA 2016 Diane Bouchier Award for Excellence in Botanical Art.
