The Best Nature Walks
Nature has always been my refuge, a sanctuary away from busy day-to-day life. For me, the best nature walks are those that are conducive to being mindful and aware of the my surroundings. This is the philosophy behind NatureArt Lab nature activities.
Such nature activities are opportunities to be curious, which might seem straight forward, but sometimes they pose ethical dilemmas. As I immerse myself in the beauty of a location, I am aware that my mere presence might have an effect on the environment itself.
While it may seem tempting to lie in a bed of wildflowers for that perfect photograph, that kind of nature activity feels cringeworthy. Instead, I think about how I can move through a place and leave no trace of my presence. I stick to paths and avoid the temptation to turn over rocks. I clean my boots before and after a walk to remove seeds. If I see rubbish, I pick it up. I also realise this is not enough.
Every natural environment presents its own set of considerations. Local knowledge can be key to enjoying nature walks responsibly. I like to research an area before I go, familiarising myself with its flora, fauna, and conservation efforts that might be underway. There might also be cultural sites to know about.
Damaged environments are especially vulnerable. Fires and floods may be a feature of Australia’s landscape, but the more severe events can damage ecosystems to the point they don’t recover. Witnessing what happens in these environments on nature walks by nature journaling and photography can aid understanding about the delicacy of natural environments, yet I recognise the importance allowing these ecosystems to recover, with minimal human intrusion.
NatureArt Lab provides expertise and passion on understanding and conserving our precious natural world. This is contagious in the best possible way!
