International Wolf Day
Today is International Wolf Day.
Wolves are an incredible species, highly adaptable, there are wolves or canines related to wolves on almost every continent. As apex predators, they have an important role in eco-systems as they prevent over population of herbivores such as deer and rabbits. This promotes biodiversity, without wolves these animals would eat all the vegetation in an area which would be disastrous for other species that rely on the flora in a region. They also aid in natural selection by mainly targeting sick and weaker animals and provide a food source for scavengers.
Despite their generally shy demeanor, wolves have been historically vilified as man eaters and a menace to farmers. As a result wolves were hunted to near extinction in several countries. Recent conservation efforts, including those in Yellowstone National Park in the US, have allowed wolf populations worldwide to start making a comeback.
While the only animals related to wolves in Australia are Dingoes and domestic dogs. It's still important to recognize conservation efforts like this and educate people on the role of apex predators in eco-systems. Because they deserve just as much respect as any animal.
By taking part in eco-tourism, donating to local zoos with wolves and by looking into and donating towards wolf conservation efforts. You can help safe guard these incredible animals and the role they play in maintaining biodiversity worldwide.
