World Parrot Day 2024

World Parrot Day 2024

Every May 31st is World Parrot Day.
World Parrot Day was started by the World Parrot Trust in 2004 as a way to raise awareness of threatened and endangered Parrot species worldwide.

Australia is home to many unique and iconic species of parrot that are beloved worldwide, sadly many of our parrots are vulnerable or endangered.
Some of our threatened parrots include the Golden-Shouldered Parrot, a critically endangered bird living in the northernmost reaches or Australia, The Orange-bellied Parrot, which lives in the south of mainland Australia before flying to Tasmania during summer to breed. The iconic Gang-gang Cockatoo, which is being threatened by the removal of the older trees they call home. The Superb Parrot, which can be seen in small flocks around Canberra and NSW and the Swift Parrot, critically endangered, it also migrates to Tasmania from the mainland during the summer months.

Here's some things you can do to help our vulnerable bird species:

  • Plant native species to provide sources of food for foraging
  • Plant trees that have hollows, a lot of our parrot species need hollows in order to nest.
  • Desex your pet cats and keep them indoors or provide access to a cat run.
  • Learn about what parrots can be found in your area and help monitor their populations.
